Prayer.
Have you stopped to think what a privilege we have as Christians through this activity?
Prayer is our connection to God. It’s how we interact with Him day by day with scripture and following the leading of the Holy Spirit. This is how we are in relationship with the Lord.
God listens to and responds to our prayers.
But have you ever experienced a time when you didn’t know what to say? It’s not that the situation is difficult or desperate. You simply don’t have anything to say which doesn’t sound trite some how.
Do we skip out on the Lord? Choose not to talk with Him? I admit there have been times I’ve said “Got nothing but I love you Lord!” Most often, however, I turn to the Bible and pray HIS word.
I first learned the concept when reading Beth Moore’s book “Praying God’s Word“. This book taught me how to pray scripture to break free of strongholds in life. There is also John Eckhardt’s book “Prayers that Rout Demons” which offers scripture prayers for spiritual warfare. There are other books which teach us how to pray God’s word for various reasons.
But when I find myself at a loss for words I turn to the Psalms.
Most often, it’s those which praise and honor God:
“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.Psalm 95:1-11 ESV
“To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1 ESV
“My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.” Psalm 34:2 ESV
What I find happens is my own tongue is loosened. Before I know it, my own words take over. And soon enough I am talking with the Lord. His word is so good.
“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.” Jeremiah 15:16 ESV
So, if you find yourself having one of those days where you don’t have the words to pray (whatever the reason) turn to scripture. There is nothing more meaningful, powerful, or life giving than God’s word.
