Pick Your Word

trust your heart sample Pick Your WordThis week, my friend Bonnie (The Faith Barista) is asking us to think about trust. What does that look like in our lives? How do we (why) do we trust God?

So I decided to look up the words which mean trust. Here are a few listed:

Assurance.

Certainty.

Conviction.

Dependence.

Hope.

Expectation.

Faith.

What does the word trust mean? The official definition in the dictionary/thesaurus is"belief in something as true, trustworthy".

THIS is what our relationship with God is based upon.

The (pick from the above word list) that He keeps His promises. The (pick your word) that He loves us. The (pick your word) that his plans are always good and for our benefit. (Pick your word) that HIS word (the Bible) is reliable and we'll be obedient to what He says BECAUSE we (pick your word) Him.

Trust is what God desires from us. The belief that HE is Who He Says He Is—even when we have to wait for Him.

Are You Feeling Lucky Today?

friday the 13th Are You Feeling Lucky Today?“But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence." Jeremiah 17:7 (NLT)

I'm sitting on the sofa, typing away on my little laptop, pondering what I should post about today.

Outside my apartment windows, snow is gently falling.

The first real accumulation we've had in our area this Winter.

The trees are frosted.

The ground is blanketed in white.

The air is misty with tiny, crystalline flakes that stick to eyelashes and hair.

I imagine the roads are slippery but I have no where I need to go. My husband is already home from work. We live next to the church so he walks most days anyway. Both my girls are back in the dorms of their respective colleges with classes which don't start until Monday.

It's a quiet kind of day, you know?

Peaceful.

A day like every other which has come before it—filled with endless possibility.

Because I trust the Lord.

Testing God

cliff jump Testing GodYou know, despite what many people think, it's probably not a really good idea to test God.

Because He is…you know…GOD!

Even so, there are times when my life when I've done just that. Gotten up in God's face (metaphorically speaking) and asked Him to prove Himself to me.

And in all honesty, I should probably have been made a smear on the sidewalk many moons ago because of the sheer audacity of my attitude.

After all…you know…GOD!

Who do I think I am?

Yet despite all my bluster (and let's be honest…lack of faith) from demanding a so called "fleece" as proof of God's intention (which I've come to learn is a terrible twisting of the scriptures, btw. just sayin) what often happens is that God shows His infinite patience and grace…and does it. In His own way and timing, but with no room for doubt that it's an answer to the challenge. The kind of thing that has you imagining Jesus, standing next to you with a satisfied smirk and a raised eyebrow, nudging your shoulder with His own in an admonishing "Next time be more patient!" kind of way.

Not some crazy kind of miracle (necessarily), but a subtle change of situation which turns out to address a certain lack of faith (hence the "fleece"), and provides what you requested in such a way that it was probably part of His plan in the first place.

Because…you know…GOD!

Funny how that works.

A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Alexander A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad DaySome days are just no good.

It may start out well and be filled with promise but then along comes that wind of circumstance and suddenly the temperature changes and everything becomes cold, dark, and dismal.

Yesterday was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!

I won't go into the gory details about it but suffice it to say it's a cause for great financial stress on our family and one which has us throwing our hands up in the air with a great big "COME ON!"

As is usual with these types of situations it came on the same day we were meant to go to a Worship and Art Night at Common Ground Discount Christian Bookstore.

You know, when your really stressed, worried, angry, annoyed, unhappy, and in a generally unpleasant mood it can be hard to pull up the energy to even leave your house, let alone go somewhere to worship God!

Cuz let's be honest…when this hard stuff happens it's easy to get a "what's the point" attitude.

However, I decided I was going to go anyway and worship God because we are called to do so at all times, whether things are tough or easy, even when we don't necessarily feel like giving Him thanks.

So I was in my car on the way over to the bookstore, fussing and bothering over everything and decided I would listen to The Word of Promise. In case you don't know, Word of Promise is a dramatized version of the Bible using the New King James version. It's beautifully voice acted by people like Jim Caviezel, Danny Glover, Louis Gossett Jr., Marsha Gay Harden, etc.

Stressed and unhappy, I wasn't sure what I wanted to listen to on the drive over to the bookstore. In fact I just grabbed the New Testament set of cd's and pulled one out of the pack without even looking at it, shoving it into the player.

And this is what I heard:

"Then He (Jesus) said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them.

Of how much more value are you than the birds? And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?

“And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.

“Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:22-34 (NKJV)

In my house, we call that a "God thing".

Encouraged by those words, I arrived at Common Ground for the worship and art night and it was such a blessing. Truly a wonderful time of singing praise, praying, and worshiping God in spite of all the current difficulty my family is facing and I'm so glad I went.

Are things still terrible, horrible, no good, and very bad?

YES!

But even so I am going to seek God and trust that no matter how difficult things become or continue to be, the Lord is with me and my family….and I will praise Him.
