Because of my past, there are questions people tend to ask me. I’m sure you can guess the one I’m addressing today.
Should Christians ghost hunt?
My answer should be obvious. No. Christians have no business poking about dark homes or reportedly haunted locations trying to make contact with “the spirit world” (whether it’s out of curiosity or a desire to help people). The Bible makes it clear what kind of spirits are being contacted when sought out (hint: not human, but rather, demonic).
Additionally, I’m going to take this a step further (much to the consternation of some, no doubt). Christians have no business using the same or similar techniques used by ghost hunters for any reason (including what’s called “deliverance” ministry).
Because proof is not required before a Christian seeks to bless or cleanse their home if they suspect demonic activity. As redeemed disciples of Jesus Christ, we have been given HIS authority upon which to stand.
As Christians, we have spiritual armor and weapons to wield. We are sustained by faith through any battle -however long it may be waged-because God is the One who brings the victory.
Using such ghost hunting techniques (even “passive” EVP work), despite the best of intentions, doesn’t change the fact spirit communication is being employed. And Christians have no need to “verify” or “prove” their prayers have worked to rout demons by obtaining a recording (even an empty one). All that does is suggest a level of unbelief in God’s ultimate authority.
There are multiple reasons why these activities (or those like them in form or function) should be avoided. I’ve written other posts over the past few years explaining why I hold the position I do. But I will close this post by citing what I believe wraps things up pretty clearly:
“When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.”Deuteronomy 18:9-11(NIV).
Here is the point. We don’t need to imitate the world. This should include ghost hunting or the activities associated with it, whether we believe it is for the right reason or not.
