As the days lead up to Halloween, a common theme can be seen in comments, questions, and searches when it comes to Christians and the occult (especially regarding witchcraft).
People are looking for Bible verses, information, and anything which can lead them to spiritual safety in a month when fear is a regular feature.
All we see, hear, or talk about as Halloween approaches are things which are spooky, frightening, revolve around death or darkness or the occult. This leads many to believe they need “extra” protection or to learn some way to avoid these things from intersecting with us altogether lest we bring spiritual attack into our lives.
What I have learned, however, in the years since re-dedicating my life to Christ is Christians have no reason be be fearful or give into the idea we need extra protection from the enemy. Why? Because we already have all we need to defeat him.
Satan is a defeated foe.
Numerous verses throughout the Bible remind us not to worry, trust God, have no fear, believe in the Lord, stand firm, He is our protection. We can face whatever my come (because scripture does not guarantee we won’t face troubles or difficulties or fearsome foes) because we stand firm in faith and knowledge Jesus Christ has already defeated our spiritual enemy.
“David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished.” 1 Chronicles 28:20 (NIV)
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1 (NKJV)
“When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4 (NIV)
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (NIV
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. “Romans 8:15 (KJV)
“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV)
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” 1 John 4:18 (NIV)
Being fearless. This is what we are called to in Christ. James 4:7 is my key when it comes to this world (witchcraft, the occult, or any thing else) “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” I meditate on the full armor of God provides as described in Ephesians 6. Trust God is with you always. Yes. There are evil things in this world but my hope and salvation are found in Christ. And I know I have been given HIS authority upon which to stand.
Spiritual warfare takes place around us every day. When we blind our eyes to this reality we are giving the enemy what he wants. We are made ineffective, held hostage by fear, worry, doubt. We do not need to find protection for the things of this world but simply trust in THE ONE who is already going before us into the battle.
“I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.” Psalm 18:1-3 (NIV)
