Who Are You Praying For This Halloween?

many pumpkins Who Are You Praying For This Halloween? The children who will be going out in search of treats.

(Father, I pray that you would put your hand of protection on these little ones who are going door to door, attending parties, or wandering other venues in search of treats. Help drivers and other adults be mindful of these small people.)

Parents of those children for patience as they deal with their sugared up offspring.

(Lord, I ask you to provide an extra measure of grace to parents as they direct their child or children through the night. Protect the adults as they walk, drive, or otherwise accompany their children on dark roads.)

Law enforcement officers who have to deal with unruly party goers or people who take advantage of the expected mayhem Halloween can inspire.

(Please protect police, fire/rescue, and other individuals who may be called out throughout the night to respond to emergencies.)

Churches providing alternative or outreach activities for their community.

(Thank you for brothers and sisters in Christ who are giving of their time, energy, and resources to engage their neighbors, be a blessing, and provide the light of biblical truth. I pray that seeds would be planted and the harvest plentiful.)

Ghost hunters who are holding or participating in special investigations.

Mediums, psychics, spirit channelers.

Dabblers in the occult who are playing with Ouija Boards, pendulums, tarot cards, etc.

People who are serious practitioners of witchcraft.

People who are involved in any form of Satanism.

(Lord, I pray for all those who are involved in some form of the occult–that the
truth behind what they are seeking, invoking, or investigating may be revealed to them. Have mercy. Protect them. Show them your grace as revealed in scripture. Draw them to Yourself and salvation through acceptance of Jesus as Lord and repentance of sin.)

Lord, please continue to equip your church– that we would shake off the shackles of fear when confronted with issues or people involving the supernatural or paranormal. I ask that you help us take up the full armor, engage in spiritual warfare, and claim our authority in Christ which You have provided.

And I pray we will step out of our sanctuaries into our communities with the gospel, peace, love, hope, friendship, and Your ever present grace.

"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done." Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

Kick It Old-School

Spiritual Warfare1 Kick It Old SchoolThe popularity of such shows as Ghost Hunters or Paranormal State have encouraged many Christian to believe that paranormal investigation(ghost hunting) is something we should participate in.

In the past, I have written several posts as to why this is not a biblical response to claims of paranormal/supernatural activity (aka spiritual harassment). Here are two reasons I think Christians should have nothing to do with ghost hunting, paranormal investigation, or mimic these techniques when dealing with the spiritual realm:

1) God condemns communication with the dead or seeking out people who do so:

When they say to you, "Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter," should not a people consult their God?{Should they} {consult} the dead on behalf of the living? Isaiah 8:19 (NAS)

2) Spiritual deception:

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2 Timothy 4:3-4

As Christians there is only one response to alleged paranormal/supernatural activity.

Spiritual warfare– Prayer. Fasting. Scripture.

Standing on the authority of Jesus Christ, given to us as HIS disciples. We don't need to try to get video or photographic "evidence" of spiritual activity. We don't need to "verify" claims by attempting to capture EVP's through use of recording devices. We don't need to identify (what as Christians we should already know) is the cause of any "haunting" (demonic activity).

Instead, we stand firm in our faith. We command the spirit to leave in Jesus name.

If the harassment does not end then we persevere. We trust God's sovereignty. We ask fellow Christians to stand with us. We break down spiritual strongholds. We realize these spiritual battles are already won on our behalf.

For the Christian, there is no other course of action.

Spiritual Disciplines ~ Prayer and Worship

people holding hands sunset(1) Spiritual Disciplines ~ Prayer and Worship"So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing." 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)

I went to choir rehearsal for the first time yesterday. It was something I've been thinking about for awhile. People have been encouraging me to join the choir but I was hesitating, not sure if music ministry was something I was called to be involved in any more.

The rehearsal was great! These people know how to have fun and made me feel as if I'd always been a part of the group. This choir also knows how to worship. Every song we sang, whether for warm up or learning something new, was done in a spirit of worship. I didn't feel like I was in a choir rehearsal . I was in a worship meeting with fellow believers.

This was even more apparent when the rehearsal ended.

The choir leader directed us all to hold hands.

Prayer concerns were shared.

We prayed. Entering the very throne room of God.

Something amazing happens when disciples of Jesus Christ get together. We lift each others burdens, share fellowship, and encourage faith. How is it possible for a group of people, most who don't know each other, to be able to come together in one voice and purpose?

"For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” Matthew 18:20 (NLT)

I have discovered it's important to spend time with other believers, praying and worshiping as a body of believers. We may come from different backgrounds, incomes, or cultures but this falls away when we gather as one in Jesus name.

costaricachurch Spiritual Disciplines ~ Prayer and WorshipA few years ago I had the privilege of spending a week on Costa Rica on a mission trip. The highlight of the trip was spent in prayer with my Costa Rican friends. Interpreters had to break the language barrier for us when we ministered to one another or worshiped together. The unity was amazing. It was like a small glimpse of heaven when every tongue, tribe and nation will bow before God.

Prayer is a spiritual discipline we practice in our lives. I think the same could be said of praying in unity as a church.

It can be so easy to dismiss the importance of praying and worshiping with fellow believers. The Internet, televised worship services, and other things make it easy to forego "in person" contact with other believers. I think it can also be easier to believe we are better off when we practice Christian faith on our own.

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)

Abiding together in Christ is one of the important aspects of the Christian faith. Perhaps if we are willing to step out in faith (and be an example of God's grace) we may see a revival of unity in more of our fellowships. I've started seeing events like Gathering Grand Rapids as well as Praise and Coffee Women's Night make serious strides toward bringing believers together.

Prayer and worship is a great place to start.

Spiritual Disciplines ~ Fasting

spiritual disciplines Spiritual Disciplines ~ FastingI had the opportunity to hear evangelist R. W. Schambach at my church Sunday evening. He's 85 years old, still preaching the gospel, and delivered a powerful message about faith which "blasts barriers".

One of the things he mentioned during his message which caught my attention was the need for Christians to practice the spiritual disciplines fasting, prayer, and Bible study. As I listened I realized I've never attempted a traditional fast. I've done things like abstain from electronics or television for a week, or maybe skipping a couple of meals to pray.

I've never gone without food for a day.

So I've decided to spend the next few days understanding spiritual disciplines on a deeper level. Fasting was the challenge given in R. W. Schambach's message, so that is what I'm doing for today. Water, tea, and fruit juice. I also began a practice of Devotional Exercise for health and scripture meditation. Wholy Fit is an alternative to yoga and fits what I'm trying to do. I have the The Daniel Fast book. I considered following it a few months ago but never did. Perhaps the time has come?

Why the spiritual disciplines?

I want to press in close to God. As Christians, we are meant to grow in our faith as we walk with Jesus Christ. Practicing spiritual disciplines such as fasting allows us to focus our attention on God. We deny ourselves for a brief time but gain a blessing. But I also want to have the proper understanding of spiritual disciplines such as fasting. I don't want to go through meaningless motions. Perhaps that's why I've been reticent up until now? Maybe I simply didn't want to give up something my flesh enjoys?

I'm reminded of what scripture says about fasting:

"You humble yourselves by going through the motions of penance, bowing your heads like reeds bending in the wind. You dress in burlap and cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the Lord?

“No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.

“Then your salvation will come like the dawn,
and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind." Isaiah 58: 5-8 (NLT)

*****

“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."  Matthew 6:16-18 (NLT)

Have you given thought or place to spiritual disciplines in your life? Does their presence (or lack) affect your faith walk with Christ? What do you think the spiritual disciplines accomplish for a Christian?
