Not All That Glitters Is Gold

Not All That Glitters Is Gold

There is a very important truth which many people who profess Christ are conveniently forgetting as they seek to find a form of spirituality in their lives these days.

Not every spiritual or supernatural experience comes from God.

“But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve.” 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 (NLT)

I’m going to lay it out. Judging any spiritual experience (or lack of one) based on how it feels (good or bad) is foolishHow can I say such a thing?

Because that was how I lived my life for years.

Long before I delved into witchcraft, spirit communication, divination, ghost hunting, and the like I set myself on a dangerous path. By determining the health of my faith walk with God by how I was feeling I left myself open for the enemy to find a foothold.

Emotions are subjective. They need to be tempered by the steady truth of God’s word.

Determining what is or is not of God by what we experience alone opens our lives to deception because our spiritual enemy is clever. He twists lies with just enough truth to make it sound convincing. He is “familiar” with our lives so as to be a convincing mimic.

The ploys and promises of the enemy aren’t all that different from what the serpent offered Eve in the garden. They might be more slickly packaged, but the end result is the same.

Spiritual deception.

We believe what we are doing or experiencing is from God because it “feels or seems right”. In reality. what we have is nothing more than a convincing illusion.

Truth is not relative to our experience. Believing otherwise can result in being drawn into false gospels, exchanging the truth for a lie, embracing occult or worldly beliefs into our faith walk until the spiritual life we have is not the one God offers or desires for us through Jesus Christ.

For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.” 2 Timothy 4:3 (NLT)
