When it comes to ghost hunting and paranormal investigation there is a question that Christians should be asking.
Is ghost hunting a sin?
Well, first lets define what we mean by "sin".
According to Dictionary.com there are several definitions for the word "sin" including:
Transgression of divine law (the sin of Adam).
Deliberate violation of religious or moral principle.
Any regrettable or reprehensible action, behavior, lapse, etc.
There are several Hebrew words in the Old Testament translated as "sin". "Chattaah" means "to miss the mark", "Pesha" means "transgression, rebellion, revolt". In the New Testament "hamartano" also means "to miss the mark".
As Christians we are free from the burden of religious law because of the new covenant sealed through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and our acceptance of God's gracious forgiveness. However, this doesn't mean we can do whatever we want and we are still very capable of "missing the mark" or acting in a rebellious manner when it comes to God's will for our lives.
Now, let's consider what God has to say about spirit communication in the Bible.
“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you. But you must be blameless before the Lord your God. The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and fortune-tellers, but the Lord your God forbids you to do such things.” Deuteronomy 18:9-14 (NLT)
“Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the Lord your God." Leviticus 19:31 (NLT)
Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.1 Timothy 4:1 (NLT)
But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve. 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 (NLT)
If we are honest, scripture is very clear about the practice of spirit conjuring or communicating with spirits (other than seeking God Himself)…it is forbidden. Why is it forbidden? Because demonic spirits masquerade as "servants of righteousness" and seek to deceive people. By seeking wisdom or communication with spirit beings other than God we leave ourselves wide open for deception, temptation, and sin.
God says we are to have nothing to do with mediums, spiritists, seeking out, communicating with, or conjuring the dead.
Remember…sin is choosing to do something outside of God's will…missing the mark.
Now let's take a look at some of the equipment, in the picture above, commonly used by ghost hunters during paranormal investigations. There is a Ouija Board. While most ghost hunters don't often use these devices there are many ghost hunting teams who routinely conduct "vigils" (seances) during the course of an investigation for the express purpose of communicating with the dead or provoking (conjuring) some kind of paranormal/spirit activity.
Also in the picture are a video recorder and digital camera (used with the intent of capturing images of spirit beings or "ghosts") and a digital voice recorder (used to capture an EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomenon). There are EMF detectors (electro-magnetic field) used to determine fluctuations in energy in a given area. A pendulum is in the picture, as well as dowsing rods (divination devices), both commonly used for spirit communication as well.
In my opinion, calling out or attempting to illicit "ghostly activity" during a paranormal investigation is no different than a medium or psychic seeking to conjure or communicate with a spirit being through a psychic or mental/metaphysical process, other than the fact that modern technology is being used to record any communication.
Spirit conjuring, communication with "ghosts", divination…all of these practices are forbidden by God.
Now it's up to you to decide.
