SOAP ~ Genesis 7:1-5

noahs ark 4 SOAP ~ Genesis 7:1 5 Scripture: "'When everything was ready, the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous. Take with you seven pairs—male and female—of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrifice, and take one pair of each of the others. Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. There must be a male and a female in each pair to ensure that all life will survive on the earth after the flood. Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created."

So Noah did everything as the Lord commanded him." Genesis 7:1-5 (NLT)

Observation: My husband and I attend Resurrection Life Church (Grandville, MI). The past few Wednesdays one of the associate pastors has been giving a message based on Genesis 6-7 (Noah and the Flood). I was watching the video from June 1st. The pastor read Genesis 7:1-5. As he was speaking he pointed out that up until that time scripture says the earth had never experienced rain.

Think about it for a moment.

You're Noah. The only righteous person and walking with God. God tells you to build this HUGE boat. You do it. No questions asked. You spend 100 years building the thing while neighbors must have mocked and ridiculed day and night. When you finish God tells you it's going to rain and flood the earth. Rain. You live in a world that has never experienced rain. No idea what it is. You obey God, get all the animals and your family into the big boat. No. Questions. Asked!

Noah had faith. He walked with God daily. Noah trusted what God said even if he didn't understand all the parts. He did what God instructed. I don't know if I have ever had that kind of faith. Stepping head long into something with no clue what it is or what it means or what might happen later.

I'm thankful Jesus taught us "mustard seed faith". Faith that moves mountains. (Matthew 17:20)

But imagine…if a tiny bit of faith can move a mountain, what can a mountain size (or big boat) faith do?

Application: The pastor giving the Wednesday message (FLOOD PART TWO) made the point that Noah had such great faith because he walked close with God. He had an intimate fellowship with God. Noah was ready to respond when God told him to build a boat in a world that didn't need or know them because he already knew he could trust God's word. I want to learn to walk that close to God. I want to know that no matter what storm is sweeping through my life I have "boat size" faith to respond to God's call.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the lessons you teach me through your word. You have walked through so much with me in my life already. I love you. You've shown me how to hold onto your word with a tiny seed of faith. Give me the courage to learn what it means to have "boat size" faith as well.  In Jesus name, Amen.

SOAP ~ 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

donkey mules yolked1 SOAP ~ 2 Corinthians 6:14 18Scripture: Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said:

“I will live in them and walk among them.I will be their God and they will be my people.
Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord.
Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. And I will be your Father,
and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." 2 Corinthians
6:14-18 (NLT)

Observation: What does it mean to team up ("yoke up", "hitch") with unbelievers? Why are we told to avoid such a partnership? As illustrated by the picture of the donkey and the ox to be "unequally yoked" means binding up opposing forces together. One will dominate the other. They will veer off course. Does it mean we can't be friends or reach out to people around us who don't follow Jesus Christ? No. I believe it means do not put yourself in a position where you will be influenced by people who don't know God.This is why it's never wise for a Christian to marry an unbeliever. If two people marry and one becomes a Christian while the other doesn't that's a different matter. The Christian is then a witness to their spouse, praying for them, drawing them to Christ by their behavior/attitude in the marriage. Not the same thing as a Christian dating or marrying an unbeliever in the hopes of witnessing to them.

I think this verse speaks to a variety of situations where a Christian might be "unequally yoked" or partnered to an unbeliever. You might have a great business opportunity but what if that person doesn't reflect your values? Is it worth it to have a job where you might have to make an uncomfortable choice as a Christian? Will your faith or conduct be impacted by association or can you be a positive influence? These are things to consider. When it comes to friends we should want people in our intimate circle to be Christians. People we can stand with in prayer, hold each other up, who share the same beliefs. We will have friends who are not Christians but we need to be careful and not tie up our lives with theirs. This could even be applied to who we are interacting with on the internet through blogs and chat rooms. Ideas and influence are a subtle thing. Scripture is what should influence our behavior as Christians so we need to be careful who we "yoke" to our lives.

Application: Know my boundaries. Pay attention to the kind of influence friends who don't know Christ might be having on my actions. Am I willing to overlook something from scripture because of the company I keep? Is my attitude toward God or other Christians being shaped by the opinions of unbelievers? Am I being a positive example of what it means to be a Christian?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank you for the opportunities you give me to reach out to others and the friends/acquaintances you've allowed to cross my path. Give me wisdom to know when I'm becoming teamed up or yoked with people who might have a negative impact on my faith. Help me not to fall into the trap of believing I can change other people. Strengthen the friendships I have with Christian friends so I can be an effective witness for your kingdom. In Jesus name…Amen.

Additional Thoughts: My husband has pointed out to me I've misrepresented my thoughts about friendships with non-Christians. I don't believe we should only have Christian friends or hide in the "Christian sub-culture".  We definitely need to be out in the world as salt and light, making friends, and being a friend, interacting daily with non-Christians. I do believe we need to take into account our spiritual maturity when making close connections.

God’s Word is Proven True

ps18 02v Gods Word is Proven True

Someone recently asked me how I know God's word is true. I suppose there are lots of things a person can say in answer to that question but to be honest the most important thing is that God's word has been proven in my life and for me that's enough.

I've heard people say they have a "life verse" and for a long time mine was Proverbs 3:5-6. But for the past three years I've come to realize it's truly  been Psalm 18:1-2 (part of which is shared in the picture above). God has truly been my shield and place of refuge so much in my life. Some times I've had to look back to see the truth of it.

The benefit of hindsight.

Now I can add this:

"Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection." Proverbs 30:5 (NLT)

The Attitude of Christ

readbible The Attitude of Christ"Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had." Phillipians 2:1-5 (NLT)

It's funny how God speaks to us through His word when we are willing to pay attention. Thank you, Lord, for reminding me what's truly important and the whole point of this gig in the first place.
