Book Review: Tithing by Douglas LeBlanc

There are two practices or disciplines within Christianity which many people struggle with incorporating into their lives. Fasting and tithing. In his book Tithing: Test Me In This (from The Ancient Practices Series), Douglas LeBlanc takes us on an interesting tour over seven states in search of people who've not only made tithing a part of their Christian faith, but a practice which in some ways also seems to define them as Followers of Christ…givers.
I think there are several themes in this book which are worth exploring but two main ideas ring out. The first is that God's faithfulness is proved time and again in the lives of those who make tithing a dedicated practice of joyful worship. No one claims to become rich by tithing, but all assert that their needs are always met no matter how small the monthly budget.
A second common denominator of those interviewed by LeBlanc is a definite sense that tithing is viewed as a privilege, taking on the quality of a spiritual gift among those who've made giving their "first fruits" to God an expression of their faith.
I recommend Tithing: Test Me In This by Douglas LeBlanc. If nothing else it brings a new focus to one of the ancient practices of the church and certainly gives the reader some food for thought and perhaps a shift in perception on our participation in tithing.
