Saving the National Day of Prayer

I try not to use this blog space as a "political platform", but in the case of the National Day of Prayer I feel I must amend that consideration. Prayer is one of the very foundations of expression of the Christian life…and the free exercise of religion is a hallmark this country was founded upon.
The National Day of Prayer, instituted in 1988, was adopted based on a tradition of such days being requested by various presidents throughout the history of this nation from the very beginning. In times of peace and war, Americans have been called upon to pray for our leaders, our people, and the welfare of our country.
Since 1988, the first Thursday of May has been set aside as a National Day of Prayer. It is not mandated for all citizens, no one is required or expected to participate against their will. Thousands of people have gathered together all over this nation on the first Thursday in May since 1988 to pray for wisdom for our leaders and the well being of our country.
Once again a small, but vocal, opposition group has brought a case to the courts calling for the end of the National Day of Prayer. I find it hard to understand how one small group should be allowed to tell a larger majority how they can express themselves. Their rights are not being infringed upon by having A National Day of Prayer, but by attempting to silence the voices of faithful people in this country in the public square they are indeed infringing upon the right of free speech and religion of many others.
Freedom of religion, freedom of speech in society, in the market place…this is what is at stake.
I hope you will consider signing this petition to Save the National Day of Prayer, and when the first Thursday of May comes around this year, you will find a way to add your voice to the thousands of fellow citizens praying for this nation…no matter their religion.
