Can Christians Be Psychic?

There was a question I was asked recently:  Can a Christian be psychic?  Perhaps the question truly should be…SHOULD a Christian be a psychic, pursue psychic ability (into which I include be a medium or consult the dead, communicate with spirits, etc)

I should think the answer to this question should be fairly obvious in light of scripture.  The Bible clearly condemns psychics, mediums, diviners and fortune-tellers, false prophets…or seeking them out:

Do not turn yourselves to the spirit mediums, and do not consult professional foreteller's of events, so as to become unclean by them.  I am Jehovah your God.
Leviticus 19:31

A Christian who claims to be a psychic, or "gifted" by God as a psychic or medium, is either not reading their Bible or is willfully ignoring what it says.  I can say that because that is exactly what I did as a medium.  I ignored the Bible and re-worked it to say what I wanted it to say.  Doing this, however, doesn't change the reality or the truth of the matter.

God does not contradict or go against His nature.  Why would God condemn psychics, mediums, divining the future, or spirit communication…and then use those same individuals or practices to speak to His people?  The answer is…He wouldn't.  He doesn't.

Psychics are not to be confused with prophets of God.

No prophecy ever came from the prophets own understanding on human initiative. They were moved by the Holy Spirit and spoke from God.  2 Peter 1:20-21

When a Christian accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in their spirit.  A Christian prophet hears from the Holy Spirit as a means of blessing the church in some way.

A psychic or medium does not communicate on a spirit level but a soul level.  The source of their information…however benevolent it may seem, or what they care to believe…is demonic.

As Christians, we are warned in scripture not to believe all spirits but to test them:

Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit.  You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God.  For there are many false prophets in the world.  1 John 4:1

So…can a Christian be a psychic?  Not if they are in right relationship with the Lord.
